In addition to the oral and poster presentations, ZOOlogy 2025 will have a parallel session focused on science communication, with workshops and a science documentary watching session. These activities are free for everyone attending the ZOOlogy conference, but do note that registration* is required.
On Monday December 8th, from 13:30-15:00, conference attendees can attend one of the following activities:
- Science Journalism workshop: how to reach your public?
How can you make sure your research gets picked up by the media and reaches your intended audience? In this workshop, leading science journalists share personal experiences and tips on how to connect your science to a broader audience.
Participants also get the chance to receive personalized feedback from professional science journalists! Send your best two-sentence (max. 50 words) pitch about why your research is important to info.zoology2025@gmail.com, with the subject header ‘Pitch journalism workshop’. Please submit your pitch before November 7th!
All pitches will be reviewed by Hendrik Spiering (science editor for the Dutch national newspaper NRC, involved in the renowned science podcast ‘Onbehaarde Apen’). The best pitches will be discussed by Hendrik himself during the workshop!
We are excited to welcome multiple special guests to this workshop!
- Humberto Tan: journalist, television- and radio presenter.
- Hendrik Spiering: science editor for Dutch national newspaper NRC.
- Matthias van der Vlist: journalist for student news outlet Folia.
- Presentation skills and public engagement workshop
How can you make complex scientific topics fun and compelling for any kind of audience? How do you keep people engaged when talking about statistics? How can you make your audience feel part of your research journey? Science communicators from ARTIS Zoo and the ARTIS-Groote Museum will share insights, examples, and practical tools to help you tell your scientific story in a fun, engaging way.
- Science docu watch-together
Film is a powerful tool to engage a broad audience with science through emotion and connectivity. Join us for a watch-together of three brand new short documentaries about zoological research. Featured documentaries include The Library Within, which offers a glimpse in the young and promising field of conservation genomics; Ape to Ape, a story about the search for the world of emotions of humans and our fellow great apes; and Surviving alone: The Tale of Simone. This film is about a lonely lemur, named Simone, the last of her kind in her forest in Madagascar. The filmmakers and researchers behind these projects will be present for a Q&A!

AI workshop changed toTechnology in Zoos symposium
Due to the broad interest in the topics of AI and other technologies in zoological research, the ZOOlogy 2025 organizing committee decided to change the previously announced ‘AI in science’ workshop to a mini-symposium about technology in zoo research, which will be held as a separate parallel session on Tuesday December 9th. All conference attendees are welcome to join this symposium, and no additional registration will be required.
